Jumpgate Evolution: Overview
Jumpgate Evolution an online-only, massively multiplayer space simulation in a persistent game universe, currently being developed by NetDevil, as a followup sequel to Jumpgate: The Reconstruction Initiative, released in early 2001. As the owner and pilot of a spacecraft, pilots acquire wealth and status by engaging in trade, mining, or combat with other TRI pilots and AI-controlled factions. Jumpgate Evolution will feature an updated graphics engine, new ships & assets, more accessible game play and an expanded player support system for new and existing players.
NetDevil originally drew inspiration for Jumpgate from older single-player, free-form spaceflight games, such as Elite and Wing Commander series, and decide to launch its own online version as a "space adventure RPGs" with point-and-click gameplay, based on leveling or building up character's skills. Drawing on its original roots, Jumpgate Evolution is a flight simulator that requires actual pilot skill in docking, maneuvering, and combat, allowing players to actually pilot their ships. Success or failure depends on actual player skills rather than ingame stats. Jumpgate Evolution also utilizes a unique near-Newtonian physics model with realistic spaceflight mechanics, except for a drag component that counters momentum and limits speed. The drag was added solely for playability, as the developers found such a factor was crucial for learning to control the ship effectively.
Jumpgate Evolution's features will include:
- Unique DANCER near-true-physics flight engine
- 3 playable factions with unique ships, equipment, and space stations:
- The Solrain Commonwealth
- The Quantar Paths
- The Octavian Empire
- Faction and squad-based PvP space combat and epic battles
- Fully customizable ships with an endless combination of weapons, mining equipment, ship hulls, power plants, shields, radars and many other types of equipment.
- Huge fully explorable universe filled with neutrals and enemy factions.
- Dynamic supply/demand driven economy with realtime web statistics
- Customizable, upgradeable player-owned stations
- Useful artifacts found only through deep-space exploration
- Specialized mining vessels and equipment - refine ore into raw materials
- Registry system allows pilots to fly as civilians, military, or pirates
Jumpgate Evolution's release date is Fall 2008.
